desay- muerzo? How do you say brunch in Spanish?

Best. brunch. Ever.

The boy valets at Masa some nights and we’ve both been crushin’ on it from afar. Thennnnnnnnnn this morning he was all “… I’m kind of hungry” and I was all “… I’m kind of hungry too. And, er, I might’ve done a little background research on Masa brunch.”

And then I told him about this RIDICULOUSLY GOOD DEAL:

And we hightailed it to Masa for the best meal I’ve had in recent memory.

Bostonians- DO THIS! You get so much food that you really don’t need to think about eating for the rest of the day. Slash weekend. Oh and, uh, it’s AMAZING.

Started with unlimited coffee, in a cool glass mug:

Gooooood coffee. I’m someone who can’t have coffee like VERY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, because it is just too hard on my tummy. This is why brunch is PERFECT for me. A T ride and a vigorous walk in the cold and I was ready for it!

Then complimentary CORNBREAD (I’m going to be using a lot of caps lock, I can already tell).

Perfect. PERFECT! Moist and sweet and enhanced by these luscious toppers:

We subsequently spent the rest of the meal trying to figure out what was in them. And then the waiter told us and we were totally wrong, hahaha.

Left was apricot jalapeno jam; center was molasses butter; right was cranberry-chipotle (!). All were luscious.

For the first course, we both got the plantain empanada. Cause, um, duh. I mean, I’m sure they do something spectacular with fresh fruit and granola, but it’s a PLANTAIN EMPANADA!

Fried (for sure deep fried!) to crispy perfection! Seriously, I have never tasted anything like this. Ever. And would never ever be able to recreate it. Ever. It was spectacularly delicious in every way. Every bite had a tang of cinnamon the perfect crunch of the shell, the sweetness of the center. Per.fect.

I tried in vain to capture the luscious sweet plantain center:

But wait. Hello. The MAIN COURSE:

I got the Eggs Benedict- but succcch a twist! I love the original Eggs Benedict but now that I’ve had it this way… I kind of never want to go back.

COME ON JUST LOOK AT THIS!

I broke the yolk and of course the eggs were perfectly poached in the way at which restaurants excel, and which I have never properly replicated at home. The rich yolk mixed with the creamy avocado and the luscious and tangy and spicy hollandaise and it was just… spectacular. And the salsa was perfect, because it was fresh and acidic and cut through the richness and gave it some oomph! And having it all on top of biscuits was also a spectacularly delicious idea.

The boy got huevos rancheros. We of course swapped plates for bites. We are plate swappers. This had those awesome Mexican restaurant beans that are so rich and tangy and flavorful and I have yet to figure out how to make at home. And I don’t know what exactly was in the quesadilla thingies but man they were tasty.

But then I was like “.. I’ll go ahead and take mine back” and he was all “… I kind of don’t want to return it”.

Fab. u. lous. We ate literally everything except 3 potato pieces and half a slice of cornbread. Oh and hello for EIGHT DOLLARS EACH.

Finally, I walked home up Newbury Street to do some peliminary Christmas shopping. Unbeknownst to me, today marks the “Speedo Santa Run”.

I was in a shirt, sweater, heavy coat, scarf wrapped aroud my neck four times, and gloves, and was FREEZING. And then I saw these guys. Madness.
